Tensions and violence continue in Manipur,

As of January 4, 2025, significant ethnic tensions and violence continue in Manipur, primarily between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The conflict, which began in May 2023, has killed more than 250 people and displaced more than 60,000.

Recent developments:

Chief Minister’s apology: On December 31, 2024, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh issued a public apology for the long-running ethnic tensions. He regretted the loss of life and displacement and acknowledged the state’s challenges in restoring peace.

Infiltration of foreign fighters: Reports suggest that fighters from Myanmar’s civil war have entered Manipur, further escalating the existing conflict. These fighters, armed with advanced weapons, have escalated violence and contributed to criminal activities, complicating peace efforts.
