Record-breaking rain in Delhi in December

Delhi has recently received unprecedented rainfall in December. In the 24 hours till 8:30 am on December 28, 2024, the city recorded 41.2 mm of rain – the highest rainfall in a single day in December in 101 years.

This significant rainfall is attributed to the active western disturbance affecting the region.

The heavy rains have led to cloudy and cold conditions, with day temperatures dropping below the December average. Additionally, air quality has improved, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to ‘moderate’ levels.

Historically, Delhi receives little to no rainfall in December, averaging around 8 mm in half a day. Therefore, this year’s record-breaking rainfall is extremely unusual and has raised discussions about possible links to climate change.
