On 19 January 2025, a fire broke out in the kitchen of the camp of Gita Press Gorakhpur in Sector 19 of the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The incident occurred at around 4:10 pm, when while making tea from a small gas cylinder, the cylinder leaked, causing a fire. Two gas cylinders kept in the kitchen exploded after catching fire, due to which the fire spread rapidly and about 180 cottages were burnt to ashes.

The fire brigade personnel, with the help of local Kalpvaasis and police, brought the fire under control at around 5:00 pm. No casualties have been reported in this incident, although a person named Jaspreet got injured in his leg while running away, who was admitted to the hospital for treatment.

Gita Press trustee Krishna Kumar Khemka said that his entire camp has been destroyed by the fire. He said, “Our kitchen was of tin shed, it was concrete… nothing of ours was left, everything is over.”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took information about the incident and directed the officials to provide all possible help to the affected people. He has also ordered to re-review the security measures at the Maha Kumbh Mela.

After this incident, security measures have been further tightened at the Maha Kumbh Mela, so that such incidents do not recur in the future.
