Israel and Hamas agree

Israel’s Security Cabinet has approved a ceasefire deal with Hamas that will begin at 06:30 GMT on Sunday, January 19, 2025, effectively ending the 15-month-long conflict in Gaza.

The deal, brokered by Qatar, the United States and Egypt, includes the release of 33 people held hostage by Hamas in exchange for the release of 737 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli custody.

The ceasefire aims to facilitate humanitarian aid and reconstruction efforts in Gaza, where more than 46,000 Palestinians have been killed as a result of the conflict, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

Despite the agreement, some Israeli officials have expressed concern about the possibility of Hamas regrouping during the ceasefire period.

In Lebanon, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed international support for Lebanon’s reconstruction following the appointment of a new president and prime minister. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem praised the ceasefire deal and called for tough action against Israeli violations.
