Bangladesh, has again denied bail to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das,

A court in Chittagong, Bangladesh has again refused to grant bail to Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, who faces sedition charges following his arrest on November 25, 2024. Das, who was previously associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was detained at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The sedition charges arise from allegations that during a rally led by him, participants hoisted the saffron flag over Bangladesh’s national flag, which is considered disrespectful.

During the bail hearing, government prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan argued that releasing Das could incite unrest, a concern the court acknowledged, especially given previous violent incidents during his court appearances. Notably, Das did not attend the hearing.

The arrest and subsequent denial of bail has sparked protests among minority groups in Bangladesh, who argue that the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has failed to protect their rights. In response, Yunus has dismissed these concerns as exaggerated.

The situation has also attracted international attention. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has expressed deep concern over Das’ arrest and the broader implications for minority rights in Bangladesh, and urged the Bangladeshi government to ensure the safety of all its citizens.

As tensions continue, the court’s decision to deny bail continues to underscore the complexities surrounding issues of religious freedom and minority rights in Bangladesh.
