A powerful earthquake struck Tibet on January 7, 2025, resulting in widespread loss of life and property. The quake, measuring 6.8 according to Chinese officials and 7.1 according to the United States Geological Survey, struck Tingri County, near the city of Shigatse, at 9:05 a.m. local time. The epicenter was about 80 kilometers north of Mount Everest, at a depth of 10 kilometers.

At least 95 people have died and 130 were injured due to the earthquake. More than 1,000 houses collapsed in Tingri County alone, trapping many residents under the rubble. The tremors were felt in neighboring regions, including Nepal, Bhutan and parts of India, causing widespread concern.

Rescue operations are underway, with more than 1,500 firefighters and rescue workers deployed in the affected areas. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for massive search and rescue efforts to save lives and minimize further disasters. The Mount Qomolangma scenic area that surrounds the northern part of Mount Everest has been temporarily closed to ensure safety.

The region is known for seismic activity caused by the collision of tectonic plates. This recent earthquake is a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability, reminiscent of the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake that resulted in significant casualties and damage.
